Public Participation Opportunities for Residents Continue with a Multi-Project Open House on November 22, 2022Posted on Nov. 2 2022
The Town of Drumheller has several projects underway which require meaningful feedback from residents. On November 22, 2022, there will be two drop-in open houses at the Badlands Community Facility showcasing the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, the Drumheller Housing Strategy and the Community Social Needs Assessment. These in-person sessions are scheduled from 12:00pm until 2:00pm, and again from 6:30pm until 8:30pm.
In December 2021, Council passed two large strategic priorities for Administration to focus on; identify future recreation needs in the Valley via a Parks and Recreation Master Plan, as well as how to combat housing concerns for current and future residents by developing a comprehensive Housing Strategy. Community and stakeholder engagement for the Housing Strategy commenced in May of this year, while the Parks and Recreation Master Plan is just beginning its public engagement phase.
“At this open house, we want to highlight the vision captured from the first round of engagement and gather feedback and prioritization regarding the drafted action items,” explains Reg Johnston, Manager of Economic Development, and project lead for the Drumheller Housing Strategy. “The feedback gathered from this open house will be considered in the final stages of the strategy to go before Council.”
The Parks and Recreation Master Plan aims to provide a strategic and value-based approach to providing quality parks and recreation services (facilities, programs and other activities). “This plan will define service levels, establish priorities and focus areas and identify opportunities for optimization and increased efficiency in the Valley,” begins Darren Goldthorpe, Manager of Recreation, Arts and Culture and project lead for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. “We want to hear from all community members of all ages and usage types at all recreation facilities. If you participate in recreation, your feedback is absolutely welcomed and encouraged!”
In 2017, about 750 residents participated in the Community Social Needs Assessment Survey, providing measurable indicators of the social well-being within the community and determining areas of need within the municipality. This supports a 5-year work plan for the Town’s Community Development and Social Planning (CDSP) department, which includes Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).
“We will be launching our survey that day,” states April Harrison, Manager of CDSP and project lead for the Community Social Needs Assessment. “Through this survey, we will be able to capture meaningful feedback to better understand the social needs in the Valley and identify strategies to address them.”
The Community Social Needs Assessment and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan will have other engagement opportunities in the coming weeks.
