Routine Hydrant Flushing Begins May 26, 2025
Posted on May. 23 2025
The Town of Drumheller will begin routine hydrant flushing on Monday, May 26, 2025.
Why We Flush Hydrants
Hydrant flushing is a standard practice for water utilities. It helps:
- Maintain clean and safe drinking water.
- Remove sediment, mineral deposits, and debris from water mains.
- Protect public health and the integrity of our water system infrastructure.
How Flushing Works
The Town uses a method called Unidirectional Flushing (UDF). Water is forced at high speed through the pipes and out of hydrants to clear built-up sediment and mineral deposits.
What to Expect
During flushing, you may notice:
- Temporary changes in water pressure.
- Discoloured water (brown or yellow) due to disturbed rust and sediment.
This is normal and should clear up shortly after the work is completed in your area.
What to Do If You See Discoloured Water
If your tap water appears cloudy or discoloured:
- Run the cold water tap only (preferably in a bathtub or outdoor faucet) for several minutes until it runs clear.
- If it remains discoloured, wait 30 minutes and try again.
- Avoid running hot water until the cold water runs clear to prevent filling your hot water tank with discoloured water.
Is It Safe?
Yes. While discoloured water may look unpleasant, it is generally safe to drink and use. If issues persist after flushing your pipes, please submit a report on our Report a Problem page.
