Sixth Graders Vote to Name Town of Drumheller’s Community Promotional Float

Posted on Jun. 26 2025

The fate of Drumheller’s newest community events promotional float is in the hands of the next generation!

Recently, Grade 6 students from Greentree and St. Anthony’s schools stepped into the role of voters, participating in a mock referendum to name the Town’s brand-new community events float.

Mayor Heather Colberg, along with Returning Officer Mitchell Visser and Substitute Returning Officer Angela Keibel, visited classrooms to host this interactive and educational event.

Before casting their ballots, students got a crash course in how the Town is run and what it means to serve on Council. They also learned about the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election, how decisions are made at the local level, and how referendums are used as a democratic tool to shape public policy decisions.

Then came voting time…

Eighty-eight young voters were handed official ballots and asked to choose their favourite name from a shortlist of five fun contenders: Badlands Buggy, Cretaceous Cruiser, Dino Drifter, Dino Valley Vroomer, and Hoodoo Hauler.

“The results of the referendum will be binding,” explained Mitchell Visser. “Whichever name the kids choose will officially be used.”

The winning name will be revealed on Canada Day, July 1, 2025, when the community events float makes its grand debut during the celebrations. Stay tuned!
