Phone: 403-823-1347

It is with deep sadness that the Town of Drumheller announces the passing of Councillor Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk, who passed away May 2, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk was first elected to Council in October 2010 and faithfully served the community for nearly 15 years. Throughout her time in office, she sat on numerous community boards, contributed countless hours of service to the Drumheller Valley, and remained steadfast in her commitment to public service. She served with grace, dignity, and tenacity, and always advocated for the residents' best interests and the Valley's future.

Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk was born and raised in Drumheller and was a fifth generation Albertan. She always took an active role volunteering in her community, as she believed the time given makes our home a better place. When not on official duty, Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk was also a proud Rotarian, Council member for the governing board of the Insurance Institute of Southern Alberta, Chair of the Homestead Museum Society, and also served on regional political boards.

Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk was deeply loved and respected. Her loss will be profoundly felt across the Drumheller Valley. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her.

At the May 5, 2025, Regular Council Meeting, Council adopted a resolution to not conduct a by-election and to keep the vacant Council position unoccupied until the upcoming 2025 Municipal Election on October 20, 2025, in accordance with Section 162 of the Municipal Government Act.
