New Provincial Legislation Requires Voter Registration for 2025 Municipal Election

Posted on Jun. 2 2025

In accordance with new legislative requirements from the Government of Alberta, all residents of Drumheller must now register to vote in local elections. These changes to the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) make it mandatory for all municipalities to maintain a list of eligible voters for the upcoming municipal election.

This legislative update affects all voters participating in the October 20, 2025, Municipal Election. The Town of Drumheller is now required to compile a voter registry, which will be used to confirm voter eligibility at the polls. This list will be created using information from the provincial voter registry.

"In previous elections, municipalities had the option to establish a voter registry at their discretion. However, legislation changes in 2024 have made it mandatory across Alberta," says Mitchell Visser, Returning Officer for the Town of Drumheller. “While those who don’t register may still be eligible to vote, additional steps will be required to verify their identity on election day.

Why Register?

Registering in advance ensures that your information is included in the voter registry and helps avoid unnecessary delays on Election Day. Residents must register by September 15, 2025. Those who do not register by this date may still be able to vote but may face additional steps at their voting station.

How to Register

Residents can register by visiting www.voterlink.ab.ca. Those unable to access the online portal can register by calling 780-427-7191 or emailing info@elections.ab.ca.

The Town encourages all eligible residents to register as soon as possible to ensure a quick and efficient voting process.
